Information and Communication Technology - Year 9

Course content

St Luke's students begin their GCSE in ICT in Year 9, with 2 hours of learning per fortnight. It is a core subject, studied by all. Current year 9 students are the first to enjoy an exciting new GCSE in ICT that gives fantastic opportunities to work with a variety of technologies and offers choices such as web design, games design or computing, making it engaging and enjoyable to study. The qualification has been designed to nurture digital literacy, and provide students with up-to-date skills, knowledge and understanding of the rapidly developing digital world around us.

The course is assessed as follows:
Two 1-hour written examinations or computer-based tests. These are each worth 20%, equalling 40% of the total mark.

  • One compulsory controlled assessment unit testing depth of knowledge and understanding. This is worth 30% of the total mark.
  • A second controlled assessment unit worth 30% of the total mark.

Students are taught internet search skills to aid independence when finding relevant websites.

Homework/coursework requirements

Homework is usually set once per month.
