GCSE Environmental and Land Based Studies - Year 10

Course content

Unit 1: Plant Cultivation

This unit focuses on plant biology through the growing of crop plants. It includes:

  • soil and environmental factors affecting growth;
  • nutrient requirements for producing a healthy crop;
  • plant reproduction, both sexual and asexual;
  • the breeding of improved varieties.

Unit 3: Management of the Natural Environment

This unit requires an understanding of the formation and structure of soil and its effect on the plants and animals it supports. It focuses on:

  • the inter-relationships and energy requirements within ecosystems;
  • the effects of human activities on the environment;
  • traditional agricultural practices;
  • alternative methods of food production.

A learning homework will be set each week.

Students need to complete a portfolio by April in Y11 that comprises of:

  • Practical Skills (12.4%)
  • Work-Related Report (14.7%)
  • Investigative Project (22.9%)
  • In all this accounts for 50% of the available marks for this qualification.
