Course content
Unit 1: Plant Cultivation
This unit focuses on plant biology through the growing of crop plants. It includes:
- soil and environmental factors affecting growth;
- nutrient requirements for producing a healthy crop;
- plant reproduction, both sexual and asexual;
- the breeding of improved varieties.
Unit 3: Management of the Natural Environment
This unit requires an understanding of the formation and structure of soil and its effect on the plants and animals it supports. It focuses on:
- the inter-relationships and energy requirements within ecosystems;
- the effects of human activities on the environment;
- traditional agricultural practices;
- alternative methods of food production.

A learning homework will be set each week.
Students need to complete a portfolio by April in Y11 that comprises of:
- Practical Skills (12.4%)
- Work-Related Report (14.7%)
- Investigative Project (22.9%)
In all this accounts for 50% of the available marks for this qualification.
