Clare Hepworth-Wain

Assistant Principal

As Head of IEN (Individual Educational Needs) and as a qualified SENCo (Special Educational Needs Coordinator), I lead on and oversee provision for our students with SEN, EAL and other Individual Educational Needs.

I am committed to developing and managing inclusive practice throughout the College and to ensuring our provision is differentiated, specialised and innovative; underpinned by high quality resources, a curriculum organised to meet individual need, opportunities for additional support and individual exams access arrangements where appropriate.

I work with our staff to implement effective interventions to improve the learning and outcomes for students with SEN, EAL and other Individual Educational Needs, regardless of their starting points.

As part of my role, I deliver high quality INSET to all staff on a regular basis, supporting them in delivering a curriculum that encourages students with Individual Educational Needs to become curious communicators, ambitious for themselves and others. I also contribute to our staff induction programme and to the South West Initial Teacher Training programme (SWITT).

I work closely with students and value student voice on matters concerning Individual Educational Needs and I believe our Christian ethos fosters hard work, compassion, creativity and resilience. It is an ethos that encourages our students to make the best use of their talents, both in their lessons and in the wider life of the College.

I enjoy working in partnership with parents, carers and our wider community, offering specialist guidance, advice and support on securing the best outcomes for students with Individual Educational Needs and I liaise with primary schools and post 16 providers to secure successful transitions for students joining or leaving St Luke's.

As Designated Safeguarding Officer, I am proud of the nurturing environment at St Luke's where students feel safe and secure. The College is highly inclusive, and gives an excellent quality of care to its students. All achievements are valued and our co-curricular provision, subject to rigorous risk assessment, encourages our students to develop their communication, negotiation and leadership skills.
