Mathematics - Year 9

Course content

This is an important year as it is the last chance for students to consolidate their understand before their GCSE course begins! Year 9 continues to follow the Kangaroo stages from year 8 which are available on our school VLE. Students will study a variety of topics across all four areas of the maths curriculum - Number, Algebra, Shape and Space, and Handling Data. The different stages offer core, support and extension work so that each student is stretch at their own personal level.

Students will also be entered during the year for a Functional Skills qualification at either entry level, level 1 or level 2. These exams are related to real-life situations and require students to apply their knowledge far more than a standard maths exam. The exams are currently a requirement if they wish to choose a Diploma course as one of their options. If they wish to complete a level 1 diploma, they must pass level 1 functional skills and so on.

After the May half term, we begin the maths GCSE course to allow students more revision time and also give the possibility to some of early entry.

We formally assess each half term to monitor student progress and identify any areas where students are struggling.
