Course content
Within the first couple of weeks of students starting at St Luke's Science and Sports College, we give them a formal assessment in mathematics. This, as well as information from their primary schools allows us to set them correctly by ability. Setting in maths is essential in order to provide each student with the support necessary to ensure they achieve their maximum potential. High ability groups are generally larger, allowing students who find maths difficult to be taught to be taught in smaller groups where there will be more staff available to help them.
Year 7 is an important transitional year for all subjects and our main aim is to ensure that we enthuse students about the wonder that is maths! We all love our subject and want to pass that love to each and every student in our care. We use many interactive resources and have an ICT room within the department. We are dedicated to providing good quality lessons which relate to real-life situations and promote problem solving.
We formally assess each half term to monitor student progress and identify any areas where students are struggling.

Home work is set weekly - this can be either traditional written pieces, research or from the mymaths website, where each student is issued their own login and password when they first start at the school.
