Controlled Assessments (60% of final grade)
Most of year 10 is spent completing GCSE controlled assessment. Students need to complete 2 written assignments and 1 practical production.
The written assignments should be approximately 500-1000 words long and each will focus on a different area of media, for example: film, animation, advertising or magazines. Students will be expected to analyse media texts and produce their own for each assignment.
The practical production asks students to research existing media texts (for example teenage magazines) and then to produce a new one! They are then expected to produce a supporting account - an evaluation of how well they feel they have achieved the aim of their product.
Exam (40% of final grade)
Students will prepare for the unit 1 exam which is taken in the June of year 11. Each year the exam focuses on a different media text: for 2015 it is 'Television News'. Students will study the key conventions of each media platform and will be given a pre-released brief four weeks before the exam in order to prepare.
