Throughout the Year
Accelerated Reader lessons - Students are encouraged to read daily and once a fortnight they will have a reading lesson in the library. Our new programme will promote reading for pleasure and encourage pupils to use reading to learn. Students will have the opportunity to complete online quizzes which will track their reading and comprehension progress.
Assessments - Within each unit the key Assessment Foci will be assessed in the English class workbook which will take place periodically throughout the year.
Here are some of the units covered during year 7. Classes will complete these at different times of the year to allow for sharing of resources and class texts.
Narrative techniques - Class reading of a novel followed by a range of tasks to identify and evaluate the choices made by the writer. This year, most classes will be reading Holes by Louis Sachar.
Speaking and Listening - Students learn a variety of discussion skills though formal and informal debates and discussions about a range of topics.
Descriptive writing - Using a variety of stimulus material, students are asked to produce a piece of descriptive writing, looking at how to use a variety of sentence structures and a range of descriptive vocabulary.
Non-fiction - Students will study a range of non-fiction texts and will look at purpose and audience, as well as appropriate language techniques.
Shakespeare 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' - Students read extracts from the script and complete a number of creative tasks, including role play and writing in role.
Spoken language - Aspects of spoken language are explored, including how an individual's spoken language changes and adapts according to different situations.
Poetry - Students study a range of poetic techniques and explore how poets use these for effect in a response to a poetry question.
Speaking and Listening - Students learn how to structure formal speeches and presentations effectively and appropriately and they are given the opportunity to present a speech of their own at the end of the unit.
Writing fiction 'The Quest' - Students undertake a number of problem solving tasks as they write their adventure story.

Students should be reading at home for at least 10 minutes a day to help improve their literacy skills. They should be reading from a variety of texts; books from the school library, magazines, newspapers and information leaflets.
Homework/coursework requirements
Students will be set one task per week, which will extend or consolidate their classroom learning.
